The Path of Hope

Many of us worry about where the world is headed. We fear for what lies ahead for our children and future generations: disconnected from nature, divided as a species, experiencing the destruction of our planet. Our hope for the future is fading. For decades, experts from many different branches of science have tried to solve these problems, yet humankind continues down a devastating path.

I founded the Nature of Business and dedicated myself to showing how principles of nature can improve the nature of work. During this work, a series of ideas came to me. Years later, those ideas shaped something that many branches of science seem to point directly to, an understanding that nature’s fundamental forces form a communication system of signals that guide all living things – a universal language. The framework, called EON (Ecology of Needs), is a visual representation of the language and a graphic of its grammar.

As I came closer to the end of my consulting career, I decided a book might be the best way of introducing EON to the world. The Arrival of Edyn Ray –Her Gift of EON and the Path of Hope It Provides may feel like a fable at the start, but it stretches into the real and profound possibility of transforming human understanding of life. EON has the potential to light paths to a brighter future for humankind, and for our planet. As long as I am able, I will partner with people to help EON do just that.

Ecology of Needs & Frame for Change

EON is a visualization of nature’s universal language; the signals and signs of nature that are felt by the body and understood by the mind. The graphical grammar of EON demonstrates how natural forces balance tension. Like the poles of our planet, seemingly opposite forces actually give us our bearings. They help us navigate sustainable paths, steering us from where we are to the place we have the potential to be. EON is sustainability in its most intuitive form, the sense of sustainability already inside us all.

Navigating the complex world around us requires that we navigate the complex world within. We experience our inner navigational signals through embodied sensations, which EON allows us to visualize and apply. In EON’s ecology, needs arrange themselves into three tension-balancing pairs. Braided together, these pairs form the navigational triangulation that can be applied at any scale— individuals, families, organizations, communities, economies, countries, even environmental ecosystems.

The tension balancing pairs use two different dynamics of tension, allowing living things to maintain their well-being while simultaneously evolving toward becoming their best. Forces that maintain boundaries and resist change stabilize current states of being. Forces that move boundaries and insist on change actualize potential and shape stages of becoming. This sustainable balance between change resistance and change insistence, keeps us …

Well-supplied with resources

Well-protected from threats

Well-suited to our place

Proficient in our participation

Optimized in our potential

Integral in our purpose to others

EON offers many possibilities: a deeper understanding of life and the world around us, a way to reconnect with the knowledge we sought to separate ourselves from, and perhaps, a new understanding of life itself.

Humanity faces planet-size challenges. Urgent, planet-size collaboration is called for. Even in embryonic form, EON offers what science currently cannot: a new lens with which to view sustainability, including its principles, indicators of performance, and the structures and processes required to attain it.
